Description from the seller

[Anonymous] The Triumphs of the Abbey of the Fools. Paris, Jouaust, Bibliophile's Library, 1874, xxxii-119 pp.

A small-format volume in-12 (175x110 mm), half blue morocco with corners, spine with raised bands, gilded top (binding of the period signed Lancelin). Very good condition of the binding. Interior fresh, without foxing.

Reprint of the 1587 edition with a note on the Feast of the Fools by Marc de Montifaud.

The Triumphs of the Abbey of the Fools bring together satirical texts produced by the carnival brotherhood of the Fools of Rouen, famous for its burlesque festivities and its parodies of civil and religious institutions. The work gathers proclamations, proclamations (cries), facetious ordinances, verse pieces, and various jests delivered during the celebrations of the fictitious Abbey of the Fools.

Limited print run of 320 numbered copies: ours, one of 300 copies on laid paper.
