Description from the seller
Large cone-shaped ceramic vase from Vallauris, stamped J. MASSIER VALLAURIS in the hollow beneath the base, with a handwritten signature visible on the bottom of the vase
Form and decoration: A flared conical silhouette on a brown annular foot, characteristic of Massier production.
The cream body is adorned with an incised and hand-painted motif depicting a three-masted sailing vessel navigating beneath a flock of birds, in an emerald green and brown palette.
A frieze of stylized incised foliage encircles the top of the vase, bordered by two brown threads.
Manufacture: The stamp « J MASSIER VALLAURIS » was used between 1930 and 1953, a period during which Jean Clergue perpetuated the family tradition founded by Jérôme Massier Fils (1820–1909). A piece representative of the house's decorative maritime style.
Dimensions: 22 cm in height, 19 cm diameter at the neck.
Condition: Generally good. Notable: a glue stain at the base (visible without structural impact) and minor nicks on the neck. No cracks or restorations.
Provenance: purchased at a public auction in Venette near Compiègne (80, Somme, France)
