Description from the seller
First edition Difros 1955 498 pages.
The heart has no mercy when it takes the uphill. The Last Temptation is a work of Nikos Kazantzakis' mature age and expresses his particular philosophy of life, while its subject is Christ himself, the one called Jesus. Kazantzakis was always moved by the struggle between spirit and matter, the trials that man endures to reach perfection and similarity with God. Thus, in The Last Temptation, the Crucified Jesus is presented as suffering as a man and being tortured to subdue his nature and transcend divinity. According to Kazantzakis' fiction, Christ in an infinitesimal moment is immersed in a dream and sees that he is a simple man living an everyday life. But once he recovers, he returns to the divinity of His mission, to self-sacrifice and self-denial for the salvation of the world. For Kazantzakis, Man is both a hero and a saint.
The book is in very good condition for its age, with no notes or creases on its pages. The cover with the lithograph by Giorgis Varlamos is preserved only on the front. With the signature of Nikos Kazantzakis
