Giuseppe Ingegneri is an Italian painter known in the art world chiefly as 'The Africanist'.
Born in Veneto in 1913, in 1935 he went as a volunteer to East Africa. Struck by the 'mal d'Africa', he decided to remain on the continent for about thirty years (spending most of it in Eritrea, in Asmara), exhibiting in early group shows in Addis Ababa as early as 1939. He returned permanently to Italy only in the mid-1960s.
His works (mostly oil on canvas or mixed media) are heavily influenced by Post-Impressionism, with a material, vibrant use of color. His preferred subjects were indigenous markets, African landscapes, and, indeed, female nudes.
