Description from the seller

Classical Pianist
Original Signed Silver Gelatin Print by Michael Joseph

Photographer: Michael Joseph (b. 1941)
Date: Mid-1960s
Medium: Unique hand-printed silver gelatin photograph from the original negative
Signed, titled and dated by the photographer

A beautifully balanced portrait of a classical pianist, captured in a moment of complete concentration.

Bathed in dramatic side-light, the musician's face and finely poised hands emerge from profound shadow, creating a compelling study of precision, passion and poise. Every subtle gesture speaks of years of discipline, while the velvety blacks, luminous light and sculptural shadows demonstrate Michael Joseph's remarkable mastery of traditional black-and-white photography.

Although celebrated for his spectacular advertising campaigns and the iconic Beggars Banquet photo session with The Rolling Stones, Joseph was equally gifted at revealing the quieter character of his subjects. Here there are no elaborate sets, no theatrical props - only light, line and lyricism. The result is a portrait that feels timeless, allowing music itself to become almost visible through expression alone.

Printed by Michael Joseph in his own darkroom from the original negative, this is a unique, one-off silver gelatin print, individually signed, titled and dated by the photographer. The reverse still retains its original archive mounting tape, preserving tangible evidence of its working history and adding further authenticity and provenance.

Condition: Overall, the print remains in very good condition for a photograph now more than sixty years old. There are a few minor handling marks and slight bumps, visible principally under close inspection or when viewed obliquely. There are no tears or creases. A tiny imperfection appears just beneath the pianist's lower lip, although it is discreet and only becomes apparent upon careful examination. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.

Created by Michael Joseph himself in his darkroom during the 1960s, this evocative and elegant vintage print represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire an authentic piece of photographic history - equally appealing to collectors of vintage photography, musical memorabilia, and masterfully made monochrome portraiture.

Mount size: 50 cm high × 40 cm wide.

Seller's Story

My father, Michael Joseph, was a London-based advertising photographer from the mid-1960s to the early 1990s. Over those decades, he produced an extraordinary body of work—his most widely recognised image being the iconic Beggars Banquet gatefold for the Rolling Stones. My ongoing mission is to share and celebrate what we call “the other photos”: the lesser-known but no less compelling images from his archive. These are the works that lived beyond the headlines—test prints, alternative frames from major shoots, and quieter, more personal photographs, all made with his characteristic intensity, discipline, and devotion to craft. Much of their atmosphere comes from the darkroom itself. These are photographs shaped by light, timing, and handwork: intricate group compositions, sculptural still lifes, and moments that invite the viewer to linger and look again. Variety is central to the archive, and I frequently offer unique, one-off pieces that exist nowhere else. I hope you enjoy discovering my father’s work as much as I enjoy sharing it, and that you find here not just an image, but a genuine piece of photographic history. All works are dispatched carefully protected, and packed with devotion and care, appropriate to a one-off historical photographic print. US purchasers please note: Customs and excise charges are paid at source and included in the postage fee. No further charges should be due on delivery, unless regulations change.
