Vintage wall mirror dating from 1940–1950, with a wide bevelled glass panel set in dark‑stained wooden brackets in Art Deco style, 46 × 33 cm external and 42 × 30 cm internal, weight 2 kg, made of wood and glass with a rope suspension, originating from the Netherlands, in good condition with signs of aging and heavily foxed reflective surface.
Description from the seller
An incredibly atmospheric vintage wall mirror dating from the 1930s to the 1950s. This piece features a beautifully shaped, wide-beveled glass panel held by distinct, dark-stained wooden brackets carved with classic scrollwork and acanthus leaf motifs. The mirror is suspended by a thick, twisted rope complete with intricate, woven knot tassels, adding a subtle rustic or maritime character.
The defining feature of this mirror is its highly distressed reflective surface. Decades of natural oxidation have resulted in severe "foxing" or desilvering, creating striking black spots and organic patterns across the glass. Rather than a flaw, this heavy patination provides immense character, making it a highly desirable piece for interiors embracing a "shabby chic," wabi-sabi, or moody, gothic aesthetic where atmospheric presence is valued over a perfect reflection.
Condition Report
The mirror is in structurally sound vintage condition. The wooden carved mounts and rear backing remain sturdy, and the original rope suspension is intact. As noted and clearly visible in the photographs, the silvering on the mirror has severely degraded ("foxed"), resulting in widespread black spotting and flaking of the reflective layer. Please review all images carefully to appreciate the unique, heavily distressed nature of this piece before bidding.
