Nantan iron meteorite from Guangxi, China, weighing 450 g.
Description from the seller
Observed fall in 1516, although the pieces were recovered starting in 1958, when they were melted down to be used in the growing industrialization of China.
It is shipped with the display case.
The meteorite exploded during its passage through the atmosphere and the pieces were scattered in an ellipsis of dispersion 28 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide.
A metallic meteorite is composed, mainly, of iron and nickel. In reality, it is a piece of the core of an asteroid. In differentiation, when the asteroid is a ball of magma during its formation, iron and nickel settle in the center of the asteroid, since they are the heaviest elements. After cooling, the metallic core of the asteroid forms. Through catastrophic collisions, the asteroid and its core break apart and those fragments remain in space until some piece falls to our planet. It is estimated that they account for 5.7% of falls.
At Expometeoritos, we take care of outreach, talks, workshops, analyses, classification and exhibitions of meteorites.
We are members of:
- IMCA (International Meteorite Collectors Association) #8187
- Meteoritical Society
- American Meteorological Society
All our pieces are certified and, in addition, we provide the chemical composition analysis if the piece’s value exceeds €300, performed at our facilities by X-ray Spectroscopy.
