Two Ottoman copper plates, each 24.1 × 24.1 × 3.1 cm, dating to circa 1850–1910, from the Ottoman Empire in Anatolia (modern Turkey).
Description from the seller
These plates originate from the Ottoman Empire, very likely from the Anatolia region (present-day Turkey). The circular stamp with dots/rings on the back is a traditional Ottoman guild mark or workshop stamp (often a stylized rosette or floral motif). This type of stamp served as a quality guarantee for the copper used.
The plates date from the 19th century to the early 20th century (ca. 1850–1910), the late Ottoman period. The weight (about 480 grams per plate of 24 cm) is typical for authentic, thicker hand-forged copper from that era. The deep wear of the tin layer and the natural dark oxidation in the grooves confirm this antique status.
The plates are made of red copper (copper). They are hand-hammered from a sheet of metal. The gray, weathered spots you see across the entire surface (both front and back) are remnants of an original tin coating (tinning). Copper cookware and tableware were always tinned on the inside to prevent toxic copper oxides from entering food.
Dimensions: 3.1 x 24.1 x 24.1 cm per piece
