The former sculpts bodies through his lens, the latter relies on photography throughout his career; nothing seems to link the two artists. One chases the perfect form, the other insists on capturing movement in matter.

There is nothing spontaneous about Mapplethorpe—the meticulous one—while Rodin trusts to the flashes of gesture, even if that means accepting the accidental expression. The highly controlled plans of one echo the tormented busts of the other. The fragmentation of bodies, their compulsive examination, and the drapery that barely conceals them signal a common quest, also sensuous. Separated by nearly a century, the two bodies of work show countless similarities and produce striking diptychs."
