Dagger - Nepal - 1960-1970, 1970-1980

This is a traditional Nepalese Kukri knife, also known as a Gurkha knife.
The blade is engraved with dragon motifs and an image of a deity.
The sheath is made of leather and decorated with copper coins and other ornaments.
The handle is made of bone and is inlaid with small, colorful circular decorations.
The engravings on the blade of this specific Kukri knife carry both deep cultural and spiritual meaning within the Nepalese tradition:
The image of the Deity (Center) The menacing face with the large eyes and the crown most likely represents Mahakala (a wrathful guardian deity in both Buddhism and Hinduism) or an aspect of the Hindu god Shiva.
Meaning:
This symbol serves as a powerful amulet for protection. It is meant to ward off evil spirits, enemies, and negative energies. In Nepalese culture, the presence of a deity gives the knife a sacred and protective character.
The Dragons (Flanks) On either side of the deity are undulating dragons (the Dragon Kukri style) engraved.
Meaning: In the culture of the Himalaya region, dragons symbolize strength, wisdom, courage and luck. They visually reinforce the invincibility and the spiritual power of the knife’s bearer.
The brass tip on the sheath is missing, as well as the two small blades in the sheath.

In the center is a multi-armed deity shown with a halo around the head, seated on a feline (a lion or tiger).
Front: Shows the wrathful, fearsome aspect of protection (Mahakala/Shiva) to intimidate enemies directly.
Back: Shows the dynamic, active fight against evil and the ultimate victory (Durga).
