This work represents a bullfighting scene developed in an open urban space, where a bull occupies the center of the action surrounded by riders and pedestrians. The composition captures the moment of greatest tension of the festivity, while numerous spectators observe the event from the perimeter of the arena, creating a picture of marked popular character.
The painting is part of the Spanish costumbrista tradition of the 19th century, an artistic current that found some of its most representative themes in popular celebrations, markets, pilgrimages, and bullfighting shows. The artist’s interest does not lie in an individualized portrait of the characters, but in recreating the collective atmosphere, movement, and emotional intensity of the event.
