ARGOMENTO DEL VOLUME

Three elements especially gave Naples its international fame in the centuries of the Grand Tour: the extraordinary beauty of the gulf, the archaeological discoveries of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and Vesuvius, the volcano that more than any other fascinated travelers, artists, scientists and writers from all over Europe.
Through a selection of texts by authors such as Charles de Brosses, Chateaubriand, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Dickens, Pliny the Younger and Sir William Hamilton, the volume recounts ascents to the crater, spectacular eruptions, lava flows, showers of lapilli and the emotions aroused by the world’s most famous volcano.
The narrative is accompanied by a rich iconographic apparatus consisting of engravings, paintings, maps and period illustrations that convey the charm of Vesuvius and the Neapolitan landscape, making the volume a work of great interest for enthusiasts of travel history, geology, art and Grand Tour culture.
