AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Excellent oil on canvas of 40x50 cm (dimensions refer to the painted canvas only) by the artist Mario Cortiello. The painting is framed and equipped with protective glass. The frame will be considered a gift to the final buyer.

On the back there is the stamp and the signature for authentication by the painter's daughter who certify its authenticity.

Mario Cortiello (Naples, July 1, 1907 – San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, December 23, 1981) was an Italian painter.

Biography
He was a pupil of Gennaro Villani but soon broke away from his influence and quickly developed a personal style, able to renew Neapolitan painting without straying from tradition: his contemplative floating Pulcinellas against dreamlike backgrounds earned him the nickname the Neapolitan Chagall.

His works are present in numerous Italian museums, including the Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery in Piacenza.

He participated in important group exhibitions:

1930, 17th Venice Biennale
1934, 19th Venice Biennale
1935, 2nd Rome Quadriennale
1936, 20th Venice Biennale
1938, 21st Venice Biennale
1939, 3rd Rome Quadriennale
1939, Bergamo Prize
1940, 22nd Venice Biennale
1942, 23rd Venice Biennale
1948, 24th Venice Biennale
In 2006 one of his works was chosen for the traveling exhibition “The Train of Art” which displayed works by a hundred of the most important Italian painters.

The Municipality of Massa di Somma has named a boulevard after him.

In 2008, in Naples, a retrospective was organized on the centenary of his birth, held at Castel dell'Ovo.
