Richard Morris Hunt - Figure - 2 x Conquistador (2) - Bronze

Richard Morris Hunt (1827 - 1895) was the first French-American sculptor and architect to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Here is offered at auction an impressive and genuine pair of warrior statues in patinated bronze and Siena marble from the 19th century. Each statue stands on a curved Siena marble pedestal. One figure wears an intricately engraved armor with flowing drapery on the back and palmettes on the helm. His right hand rests on the hilt of his sword, the left holds a scroll. The other soldier, adopting a defensive stance, has a decorative feather on his helmet and holds his sword as if ready to draw it. The figures are signed Hunt on the bronze pedestal.
