Rare and desirable first French edition of Alfred Smee’s celebrated work “Mon Jardin”, published in Paris by Librairie Germer Baillière in 1876. The French text was translated from the second English edition by Ed. Barbier.
This comprehensive Victorian treatise combines botany, horticulture, geology, natural history and garden cultivation, richly illustrated throughout with approximately 1,300 wood engravings integrated into the text and 25 full-page plates (hors texte) depicting flowers, orchids, aromatic plants, trees, landscapes and ornamental gardens.
The volume is preserved in an attractive contemporary full brown leather binding with raised bands, gilt title and elegant gilt floral ornaments on the spine, making it both a scientific reference and a decorative collector’s piece.
