Kees Salentijn pursued his training at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, Department of Free Painting. O.B. Kat is his main mentor there. Salentijn studies paintings in the Prado in Madrid during his period of study.

In the eighties, Salentijn traveled frequently to Spain. He feels connected in this period with artists from diverse movements, who advocate, to some extent, spontaneous unconscious creation and do not primarily seek aesthetic representation. He combines the cheerful Cobra visual language with the influences of Spanish culture.
