About the artist:
Sean Scully was born in 1945 in Dublin. After completing his art studies in London, he moved to New York in 1975. In addition to New York, he lives and works in Barcelona and Munich. In 2007 Sean Scully was appointed a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Sean Scully's works are based on an artistic handling of vertical and horizontal color bands and rectangles. By using different techniques and materials, Sean Scully creatively plays with minimalist motifs. While he used masking tape in his early works to create precise edges, he moved away from this method in the 1980s. At that time he consciously chose to paint the outlines by hand so that they appear softer and more lively. Brushwork and application are clearly visible, and a dark, earthy color palette characterizes most of his paintings. In addition, Sean Scully also creates etchings, lithographs, pastels and watercolors. They all resemble each other in subject matter and composition. His photographic works also deal with geometric shapes, capturing individual facades, doors, windows and brick walls. In the 1990s, the series “Floating Paintings” was created, consisting of rectangular aluminum blocks painted with stripes and hung along the length.
About the artwork:
Roland Garros is the traditional home of the annually held Internationaux de France; the tennis tournament is better known worldwide as the French Open. This is one of the official posters that were designed and produced each year for the tennis tournament at Roland Garros.
