Description from the seller
Original hand-coloured woodcut leaf from a late German edition of Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia, one of the most influential geographical works of the Renaissance.
This single folio leaf, printed on both sides, is numbered 1399–1400 and originates from the sixth book. Based on the historical references within the text, this leaf was printed in a late German edition, dating to approximately 1588–1628.
The recto (page 1399) contains the chapter "Von den Moscowytern", describing Muscovy (Russia), its people, customs and northern territories. The lower part features a finely hand-coloured woodcut depicting an idealised scene of life among the northern peoples.
The verso (page 1400) continues the account of Muscovy and begins the chapter "Stlavonia oder Windisch Landt", accompanied by a beautifully hand-coloured heraldic woodcut depicting the historical coat of arms of the Windisch March and a richly decorated hand-coloured woodcut initial.
Printed in German Fraktur on handmade laid paper, this original Renaissance leaf is an excellent example of early European book printing. The woodcuts were coloured by hand shortly after printing, as was customary for deluxe copies of the period.
Condition
Good antique condition with age-related wear, light staining, minor edge wear, small tears and natural irregularities typical of handmade laid paper. The colours remain fresh and well preserved.
Dimensions
Length: 36.5 cm
Width: 24 cm
Provenance:
Private collection, Freiburg, Germany.
