Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911; from a young age he felt a strong religious vocation that led him to enter the cloistered monastery of Pietrasanta, where he stayed for three years, pursuing philosophical studies, and then devoted himself as a self-taught artist, which would lead him to exhibit in numerous shows in Italy and abroad.

A man of faith, he believes that only through art can the divine be reached. And this thought would underpin all his work:

"I try to create emptiness – Gentilini declared – This emptiness provokes in me a certain catharsis: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I reassess them, but I never know how I will fall into the painting, and this is the realization of a truth toward the sign never thought of."

He was an artist practicing asceticism, to imitate the Saint to whom he was devoted. The two natures, the human and the aesthetic, coincide perfectly.
