Antoine Maitre - Paroissien Romain - 1866

Magnificent and very complete Roman Missal edited in 1866 under the Second Empire by the publisher Antoine Maitre in Dijon (Eugène Jobard printing works).
This copy, remarkably fresh, stands out for its superb period binding in ivory-like carved覆 (celluloid/resin imitation ivory, very fashionable in the 19th century). The top cover features a richly guilloché oval medallion surmounted by a high-relief cross.
Latches & Edges: Equipped with its two original, intricately chased metal clasps, in perfect working order. All three edges are beautifully gold-dyed.
Illustrations: Contains hors-texte engravings and beautiful color chromolithographs (notably The Marriage of the Holy Virgin).
Casket: A very rare element, the missal is kept in its original rigid presentation case, bound in black leather on the outside and lined with velvet/silk on the inside.
