Description from the seller

Epistolæ ad gallo. Now first edited - Leiden, Elzevier, 1648 - (24) 501 pp - Luxurious, 18th-century red leather binding with a gilded double frame and floral motifs in the corners of the boards, a richly gilded spine and gold on the edge.

Good. Planed and worn spots - especially corners and edges, corners exposed. Faded tear? at the bottom of the spine. Paper of the boards and flyleaves slightly scuffed, pencil scribbles on the flyleaves. Interior discoloration, here and there a spot. Some worm-eaten spots - mainly in the upper corner of pages 1 to 32

This posthumous first edition contains the Latin correspondence of the influential humanist and jurist Hugo Grotius with prominent French scholars, theologians and statesmen. The letters, largely written during his stay in Paris, offer a deep insight into seventeenth-century diplomacy, the religious twists and the intellectual exchange within the European Republic of Letters
