The image presents a partially visible face, built from a play of torn, ripped, and overlapped strata, revealing different layers of colors and textures. This tearing aesthetic directly echoes the artist’s wall work, where he “drills” into the material to reveal what lies hidden beneath.

The black background deliberately shows subtle variations in texture and density, with faint marks visible. This is not a defect but a conscious artistic choice, in keeping with the raw, layered aesthetic characteristic of Vhils’s work. This finish enhances the sense of materiality and recalls the altered urban surfaces that inspire the artist.

LAYERS is a collection of generative NFTs based on the piece that Vhils develops with physical advertising billboards. Uniting the worlds of digital and physical art, this project reveals the nuances of the artist’s creative universe by reproducing the physical practice on the blockchain.

This piece is an original physical 1/1 resulting from the process of converting an NFT into a physical artwork, realized by the artist and accessible only to top collectors.

The work will be protected in kraft paper, inserted into a rigid tube, and shipped in a reinforced cardboard box.

Vhils, a Portuguese artist born Alexandre Farto, is internationally renowned for his unique technique of destructive creation. Using chisels, explosives, drillers, or acids, he sculpts directly into walls to reveal deeply human portraits. His work explores the impact of urban growth, the erasure of identities, and the collective memory carved into matter.

Vhils aligns with engaged artists like Shepard Fairey, whose graphic aesthetics question the power of media. His conceptual approach aligns with Banksy, a master of social satire. The lineage with Blek le Rat, a pioneer of stenciling, is evident in his relationship to the city. He also shares the figurative sensibility of Jef Aérosol, focused on the human. Finally, his mural universe resonates with PichiAvo, a duo blending classical mythology and graffiti.

His work also dialogues with major figures such as JR, Invader, D*Face, C215, JonOne, Sandra Chevrier, Snik, Mr Brainwash, Murakami, Jeff Koons, or KAWS, each pushing the boundaries of street art and contemporary visual culture.
