Description from the seller

Ancient WMF Jugendstil Samovar coffee urn brass rechaud burner Model 140 circa 1905

Ancient WMF coffee urn / samovar with original rechaud – Geometric Jugendstil (ca. 1903–1910)

For sale is a museum-quality and exceptionally well-preserved collectible from WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) in Geislingen an der Steige. It is an antique coffee urn (samovar) on a three-legged stand, including the accompanying original spirit burner (rechaud).

The object is an outstanding example of the geometric Jugendstil of the period between 1903 and 1910, whose design was heavily influenced by the designs of the Vienna Secession.

Design & Special Features

• Material: High-quality brass, elegantly hammered and chased.

• Decor: Surrounding, raised humped and circular decor on the hull as well as geometric lines and dot structures on the solid support legs.

• Heat protection: The original tap features a completely intact, original cane/basket-weave winding. This served as functional heat protection when pouring the hot beverage in that era.

• Completeness: The set includes the three-legged base, the large vessel with lid and carrying handles, as well as the precisely fitting burner with closure cap in the foot area.

Historical Punch Mark

On the underside of the base is the rare and historically precisely datable “Ostrich Mark.” The punch shows the WMF coat of arms (an ostrich) embedded in a diamond or a dashed square. Above are the initials “WMF” and below the letter “G” for the Geislingen production facility. This specific marking was used by WMF exclusively in the period 1903 to 1910. The object is also stamped with model number 140.

Condition

The samovar is in an excellent, age-appropriate original condition with a beautiful, authentic patina. It has deliberately not been chemically cleaned or heavily polished to preserve the historical character and the collector’s value. There are no major damages or deep dents. The basket-weave on the tap is superb for an age of over 110 years. The burner is complete and functional.

• Manufacturer: WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik)

• Production site: Geislingen, Germany

• Age: ca. 1903 – 1910 (Art Nouveau/Jugendstil)

• Model number: 140

• Inclusions: Coffee urn with lid, stand, spirit burner with cap

Dimensions: HEIGHT APPROX. 37 CM.
