Raro Bronzetto Grand Tour - "Satiro Ebbro di Ercolano" - Late 19th / Early 20th Century

Splendid and elegant bronze sculpture with a dark-bronze patina depicting the famous Drunken Satyr (or Drunken Satyr), a faithful period reduction of the Hellenistic masterwork found in the 18th century at the legendary Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum (the large original is today housed at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples). The mythological figure is captured in a moment of abandonment and Dionysian joy, languidly reclining on a rock covered by a lion skin and resting on a wine amphora, with the right arm raised to snap the fingers in the typical dance gesture.

Unlike the more common resting representations of Narcissus or Mercury, the casting of the Drunken Satyr in this desk-tablet format is decidedly unusual and difficult to find on the antique market. It is a highly representative art object of the Grand Tour phenomenon, masterfully cast by one of the historic Neapolitan foundries active at the turn between the 19th and 20th centuries (in the style and tradition of the renowned Chiurazzi or Sommer workshops).

The work is presented in good overall condition, fully authentic and intact. The original dark patina is well preserved and shows only minimal, fascinating signs of time that attest to its era and enhance its collectible charm. The sculpture rests on a solid and elegant circular marble base. No visible stamps or signatures are evident on the exposed surface (likely hidden beneath the marble base mounting), a detail common in the period’s souvenir-arts castings. A superb piece, of great visual impact and perfect representation, ideal to enrich a collection of ancient bronzes or to decorate a refined interior.
