Artistic Description and Subject

A classic and evocative oil-on-canvas marine painting depicting a majestic three-masted sailing ship (likely a clipper) in full ocean navigation. The work fully belongs to the solid landscape and naval tradition of the Dutch school of the twentieth century. The ship, shown in a three-quarter view, cuts decisively through the rippling waves, propelled by the wind that fills the entire sails.

The artist demonstrates excellent mastery of the naval and atmospheric genre: the color contrast between the dark Ocean, painted with bold, foamy brushstrokes in the foreground, and the warm light that bathes the sails creates a notable dramatic and dynamic effect. The background features a dense, changing sky typical of the North Sea, where gray, humidity-laden clouds open up to sudden gaps of light and blue.

Signature, Inscriptions and Technical Details
Front of the work: In the bottom right, dark on dark, the artist's autograph signature "P. Hansen" stands out clearly.

Back of the work: The original canvas, slightly browned in color suggesting a probable dating to the mid-20th century, is well stretched on its contemporary frame. On the back of the wooden frame are handwritten numbers "83 63" and "68 48", corresponding to the outer dimensions of the frame and the net dimensions of the canvas.

Conditions and Frame
The painting presents in excellent overall conservation condition. The surface is sound, with no evident color loss, and retains the vibrancy of the chiaroscuro contrasts. The work is offered within a light-toned wooden frame, enriched by a gold inner profile and a passepartout insert. Note that the latter shows some natural foxing and small spots due to the passage of time, which do not affect the reading of the artwork but attest to its history.

Condition Report:
General state: The work is in good structural condition and in its original state, without recent restoration interventions.
Surface: Shows a natural craquelure grid, evenly distributed across the surface, consistent with the aging of the oil binders of the period. Some minor, localized time-induced foxing and very slight superficial scratches in the upper part of the sky are noted, which do not compromise the overall aesthetic rendering of the subject. A stain at the top left and a scratch at the top right, plus other scattered defects visible in photos.
Support: The original canvas maintains proper tension on the antique wooden stretcher. The back shows the natural patina of time.

The frame, if visible in the photo, is included in the lot as a pure gift from me and is not part of the sale, does not determine its value, and due to its delicacy is not insured. Consequently, any defects already present on the frame are not reported, and any damage to the frame during transport will not be considered for claims or returns.

If shipping is chosen, I will do my best to package it to protect the frame during the journey.
