Artistic Description and Subject
Splendid oil painting on canvas by the Swiss painter Henri Matthey-Jonais, depicting a suggestive and lively glimpse of the city of Florence. The work frames a vivid urban scene: in the foreground, colored market tents (presumably the famous San Lorenzo market) stand out, rendered with swift and textured brushstrokes.
In the background, the composition is dominated by the majestic Florentine Renaissance architectures: the unmistakable red dome and the bell tower of the San Lorenzo Basilica complex and the Medici Chapels are clearly recognizable. The artist uses a luminous palette and a post-impressionist painting approach, characterized by dense and vibrant color touches that magnificently capture the light of the Tuscan sky and the warm ochre tones of the historic buildings.
Signature, Inscriptions and Technical Details
Front of the work: At the bottom right the autograph inscription "Florence 23 IX 51" is clearly visible, followed by the artist's signature.
Back of the work: The canvas is mounted on its original wooden frame, which shows the natural patina of time.
Inscriptions on the frame: On the upper rail of the frame is handwritten in pencil the measurements "60 x 55". On the left upright of the frame is vertically noted the word "FLORENCE".
Conditions
The work is in conservationally good overall condition for its age (1951). The back of the canvas shows the usual oxidation and darkening due to time. The pictorial film on the front remains textural and well preserved in its impasto layers.

Consequently, any defects already present on the frame are not reported and any damage it may suffer during shipping will not be considered for claims or returns.

For this reason, delivery times to European Union countries may be slightly longer than usual due to normal customs procedures. I would also remind you that, since Switzerland is outside the EU customs area, import duties, local VAT and customs duties are entirely the buyer's responsibility and will be charged by the authorities of your country upon delivery. I advise you to inform yourself in advance to avoid surprises.

Pickup and Packaging: Alternatively to shipping, if you have the possibility, in-person pickup in Geneva is always my preferred option and I strongly recommend it, as it will eliminate transport costs and ensure maximum safety for the work. If shipping is chosen, I will do my best to pack the painting to protect it during transit.
