Description from the seller
René Mels (1909-1977) Belgian School
Pastel on paper, 1970
Signed and dated bottom right: R. Mels 70
Dimensions: 53 × 45 cm (with antique mat)
Sold with its antique mat – Not framed
Condition: Very good condition of the work. Some stains and signs of wear on the antique mat (normal for an old piece), with no impact on the pastel itself.
Magnificent abstract-expressionist pastel by René Mels, dated 1970.
This powerful work plays with pronounced contrasts of deep blacks, bright whites, ochres and greys, with a touch of terracotta. The gesture is energetic, nervous, and highly expressive, characteristic of the artist’s maturity in the 1970s.
Dynamic, almost swirling composition, evoking both raw matter and a moving organic form.
