Description of the work
Powerful figurative watercolor by Marcus de Vestele, circa 1975.
A totem figure or ritual mask, with stylized and intense features, occupies the center of the composition. The red-orange face, with empty yet expressive eyes, seems to emerge from a architectural and symbolic environment.
The background, treated with dynamic stripes and drips, reinforces the totemic and mysterious aspect of the scene.
The gesture is free, spontaneous and charged with primitive energy, perfectly in the Cobra spirit. The work blends tribal influences, expressionism and lyrical abstraction with great poetic force.
Biography
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a Belgian artist known primarily as a sculptor in marble (Carrara, Bardiglio…), but he has also developed a powerful and long-confidential pictorial production, today highly sought after by collectors.
Deeply influenced by the Cobra movement (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille…), he draws on it to create abstract-figurative compositions full of spontaneity, bright colors and expressive force. His watercolors and paintings on paper from the 1970s are characterized by a free gesture, organic forms and a communicative joy of painting.
His works coming directly from the studio combine sculptural rigor with the lyrical explosion of Cobra color and line. They occupy a singular place in Belgian art of the second half of the 20th century.
Unique piece from the studio – Artist's stamp
