Description from the seller
Postmodern Architecture: Set of 6 Chairs "Quinta" – Design Mario Botta – Original Production Alias (1980s)
We present at auction a manifesto of 1980s postmodern design: a rare set of six chairs model "Quinta", designed in 1985 by Swiss architect Mario Botta for the historic manufacturer Alias. This lot perfectly embodies the dialogue between architecture and furniture, transforming tubular steel and folded sheet metal into a true sculptural presence for the dining area or professional studio.
Design and History: Structure Becomes Architecture
Together with the Seconda model, the Quinta chair represents the extension of Mario Botta's architectural thinking to the scale of a piece of furniture:
Sculptural Geometries: Characterized by a rigorous and essential composition, the chair uses the folding of the black-painted steel tube to create a continuous, clean and sinuous profile at the same time.
Use of Microperforated Sheet Metal: Radical innovation lies in the use of microperforated and bent steel sheet for the seat and backrest. A material of strictly industrial origin is elevated, creating a refined play of transparencies, light and shadow that visually lightens the mass of the seat.
Auction Conditions: Condition Report Excellent
The set presents in excellent used condition, carefully checked and preserved in respect of its historical value:
Frame and Paintwork: The steel tube frames have recently undergone careful conservation cleaning. The original black finish is solid, well preserved and glossy.
Sheet Metal and Details: The microperforated sheets and joints are intact, stable and free of structural defects. Only slight and natural signs of use consistent with the era and the authenticity of the pieces are noted.
Authentication Guaranteed: The originality of the lot is rigorously certified by the official Alias Italy labels on the chair frames.

The Designer: Mario Botta
A student of Carlo Scarpa and collaborator of Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, Mario Botta (born 1943) is one of the undisputed masters of postmodern architecture and the so-called "Ticinese School". Famous for buildings with pure geometric masses and a plastic use of brick and metal, in the 1980s he translated his monumental vision into the world of collectible design, creating for Alias pieces that became true icons exhibited in museums around the world.
The Manufacturer: Alias
Founded in 1979 in Grumello del Monte (Bergamo), Alias is one of the most experimental realities in Made in Italy design. The company’s technological vocation and innovative use of materials such as aluminum and metal meshes allowed the development of collections with a strong formal identity, durable over time and globally recognized.
