Description from the seller
Oil on cardboard “Portrait of a bull”, Núñez Sambucety, c. 2000-2010 - Valladolid, Spain
Interesting painting by the Valladolid-born artist Núñez Sambucety (1973). In his body of work there are several pieces related to the countryside and livestock. In this case, it depicts the face of a bull in close-up on an almost erased background. The animal, in three-quarter view, looks at the viewer with a serene expression, conveying an imposing yet gentle character. The brushwork is impasto, adding materiality to the painting. The colors are juxtaposed, a technique used by the Impressionists, with which he builds shadows and volumes without resorting to blending. The background, though very loosely defined, suggests a field of wheat, with a central path and at the top the bluish sky. This minimal setting places the figure in a recognizable environment without detracting from the animal, which dominates the composition. The color palette consists of ochres, deep browns and certain light touches that, together with the background, give a warm feeling.
