Unknown - Qu'ran - 1650

An unusual miniature folio page from a dispersed 17th Century Persian Qu'ran, containing multiple 'ayat' medallions in the left margin marking 5th verse divisions of the scripture.

The folio contains verses 32-54 of the Meccan Surah An-Najm (The Stars). These verses outline the core concepts of individual responsibility, divine justice, and monotheism. The passage emphasizes that every person is accountable solely for their own deeds, while affirming Allah’s absolute power over life, death, and the universe.

The script is evenly spaced fine naskh scripture in a good hand, with the verses marked by simple gold aya. A number of frame lines in red, gold and blue surrounds the scripture. Please note that there is a small wormhole seen only when held to the light in the lower right portion of the manuscript.

Fragments like this are central to Arabic and Islamic civilisation, not just as scripture, but as the wellspring of Arabic calligraphy, illumination and book arts. Spacilist training was required to produce these hand copied manuscripts, traditions passed down through generations of Katie (scribes) and mudhahhib (illuminators).
