Guy Denning is a British painter and street artist. He began painting in oil at the age of 11. Rejected several times by Beaux-Arts schools, he learned painting self-taught. He obtained a degree in art history from the Open University. To support his family, he worked various jobs while continuing to paint. In 2007, fed up with his country’s politics and being treated as an “English subject” rather than a citizen, he settled in Brittany and devoted himself entirely to painting.

Constantly evolving his work between tradition and modernity, he develops a highly engaged figurative style to depict social issues. He adds his “punk” touch to his universe where political discourse and chimera mingle.

The original work used to create this screen print is a small charcoal drawing on newspaper. Denning particularly favors simple supports such as newspaper or cardboard for his drawings or for preparing paintings or murals that he will carry out later. It should be noted that the vast majority of Guy Denning’s drawings, paintings or street art murals are portraits. His work on faces moves the viewer, as the expressions and emotions conveyed carry real force.

In order to personalize each of the 100 copies produced, the artist has enhanced them in turn. Reworked with charcoal and chalk, they are numbered and signed.

The interpretation of this portrait differs from person to person. Indeed, this young face, with an open mouth and closed eyes, seems to reveal a strong emotion. For some it is a cry of suffering, for others a song, for others still an act of loving ecstasy. It is interesting to note that everyone projects a part of themselves onto it.
