Semiotically, the composition is a game of scales in the literal sense — the giant purple and the distant red, united by the same reverie turned downward or toward the wide open sea. The sky, a clear blue, billowed with cumulus, occupies two-thirds of the canvas; the night-blue tiled edge anchors the scene at the water’s edge. The purple of the swimsuit, rare and delicate, contrasts with the vivid red of the background in a palette built entirely around blues.
