Semiotically, the painting plays on doubling and mirror: two women, two caps, two reflections, a central axis occupied by the bird — the whole forms a static rebus where the bathers’ frontal gaze defies ours. The orange-red of the swimsuit cuts through the layered blues of the sky, the wall, and the water; the scarlet lips punctuate the cool palette.
