Eugene Robert Richee (1896–1972) was an influential American photographer of the classic Hollywood era, best known for his iconic studio portraits for Paramount Pictures. As the studio's chief portrait photographer, he helped shape the visual image of numerous film stars in the 1920s and 1930s. He is especially famous for photographs of Marlene Dietrich, whom Richee staged with a lighting approach that was unusual for the time. His images are characterized by strong chiaroscuro, precisely placed highlights, and sculptural modeling of the face. This technique gave Dietrich’s appearance a cool, mysterious elegance and contributed decisively to her status as a style icon.
Richee’s photographs of Marlene Dietrich are today central references in portrait photography and are regarded as milestones of glamour and studio photography. They have had a lasting influence on Hollywood’s visual language as well as the staging of stars in film and photography.
