Description from the seller

Rare first edition of this important anthropological and mythological study written by the celebrated Scottish anthropologist and folklorist Andrew Lang (1844-1912).

The work is largely a polemical response to Sir James George Frazer's "The Golden Bough," in which Frazer argued that human thought had evolved through three rigid, successive stages: magic first, then religion, and finally science. Lang challenges this linear chronology, showing that magic and religion coexist and constantly overlap.

Andrew Lang, Magic and Religion, London, Longmans Green & Co, 1901.

PP.: X, 316. COMPLETE.

A copy with plates in overall very good condition.

Blue cloth binding with a gilt decoration on the front board, very well preserved. Endpapers present.
