Jacques Pouchain 1960 - Vase - Ceramic

Magnificent and rare pebble vase (or spike-flower gourd) in chamotté stoneware, made by the renowned French ceramicist Jacques POUCHAIN (1927-2015) in Dieulefit, emblematic of design and modernist ceramics of the 1960s/1970s.
This unique piece perfectly expresses the artist's quest for balance between organic forms and geometry. It features a remarkable asymmetrical surface with a double opening at the top.
Face A: A complex, graphic pattern of geometric incisions in an ethnic/cubist style, filled with an opaque milky-white crackled glaze.
Face B: A clean, smooth, satin surface coated with an iron-brown glaze (Tenmoku type) with deep metallic reflections, subtly revealing pyrites and the raw texture of the clay.
Signature:
The piece bears at its base the entwined monogram "JP", engraved in a very fluid and cursive manner directly into the mass, signature characteristic of the artist on his finest stoneware pieces.
