European school (XVII) - San Jerónimo penitente

A sober and interesting representation of Saint Jerome Penitent, painted in oil on canvas later adhered to a panel. The composition shows the saint in a contemplative stance, absorbed in reading the Holy Scriptures, illuminated by an intense tenebrist light that contrasts with the dark background and directs attention to his expressive face and hands. The austerity of the scene and the masterful use of chiaroscuro recall the European Baroque tradition inspired by Caravaggism.

The work preserves an attractive patina of age, with wear and craquelure typical of its period, elements that enhance its authenticity and historical character. The canvas was adhered to a rigid support in an ancient intervention intended to ensure its structural stability. It is presented in an elegant gilded wooden frame that enhances its presence and decorative value.
