Indhoni - cotton and shells - India - the mid-20th century

These special pot carriers - called indhoni - were used to carry water pots on the head by women of the Rabari tribe. Although these carriers were used daily, these decorative objects, to which many kauri shells are affixed, were also used at ceremonial and festive occasions. The kauri shell is a sign of femininity and fertility among the Bandari tribe, and is therefore worn at wedding celebrations as well. The round form made of cotton with a long back panel was decorated with the shells. The more shells, the more important the indhoni. Although used, this indhoni is in pristine and complete condition with not a single shell missing. Beautiful specimen. The round section has a diameter of 19 cm. The weight is 1710 grams.
