Unknown - Prayers - Turkiye - 1850

A highly desirable leaf, on burnished paper, from a dispersed Ottoman 'dua kitabi' or book of prayers originating from Turkiye around 1845. It is written in black naskh script and contains islamic supplications (dua).

The main text begins with the traditional Quranic Basmala, but then moves on into well-known supplication, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief", which is a Hadith-based preayer attributed to the Prophet Muhammad. It continues with related petitions for refugee from weakness, laziness, cowardice, debt, and the domination of men.

The manuscript stands as a testament to the enduring heritage of Islamic devotional art, in which the Arabic script and illumination are crafts in their own right. The page reflects the fine workshop traditions that flourished under the Ottoman patronage. The marginal notations in Ottoman Turkish attest tot he manuscripts continued use within a broader lineage of Arabic-Islamic manuscript culture that carries the lenaguage of revelation across Arab lands for centuries.
