Description from the seller
Atmospheric Landscape – oil on panel – Émile Boulard (1861–1943), France, 19th century
This work, executed in oil on a solid wooden panel, is by the French artist Émile Boulard, son and pupil of the well-known Barbizon painter Auguste Boulard.
The painting shows an atmospheric, gold-toned evening landscape in which a rider on a dusty path moves toward an idyllic village. In the background, the spire of a building or church tower is subtly visible against a softly sunlit sky. With a powerful, impasto brushstroke and a warm palette of ochre, dark brown, and subtle greenish tones, Boulard has masterfully captured the serene light of the 'golden hour'. The influence of the Barbizon school and early Impressionism is beautifully evident in this work.
The panel (unframed) is in good, authentic condition; the paint layers are stable and the colors have retained their warm intensity, but a simple light refreshment and a frame would be desirable to bring the artwork fully into its own.
In any case, a beautiful late-Impressionist scene from the French landscape school, lower right correctly signed "Boulard".
