Original hand-colored copper engravings – Friedrich Justin Bertuch, Picture Book for Children, Volume XI (1824)
Attractive lot of four original hand-colored copper engravings with their accompanying original explanatory sheets from the famous natural history work “Picture Book for Children” by Friedrich Justin Bertuch, Volume XI, published in 1824 in Weimar. The encyclopedic work is among the most important illustrated scientific publications of the early 19th century.
Included plates
Newly discovered birds of prey
including falcons, buzzards and eagle species
Beautiful newly discovered birds
among others Hokkos, Urumutum, Jacutinga and Jacupemba
Beautiful foreign birds
including blue tit, Manakin, Tangare and several other colorful species
Notable Brazilian birds
various toucans as well as several ibises
Each colored plate is accompanied by its original multilingual text sheet (German, French and, in some cases, additional languages, depending on the shipment). The delicate copper engravings were hand-colored in contemporary times and show the high print and coloring quality of the Bertuch editions. The plates come from Volume XI (1824).
Condition: in line with age, good condition. Paper with natural aging tint, occasional foxing, slight creases and minor signs of use. The coloring is mostly fresh and decorative. Please note the photos, they are part of the description.
