Description from the seller

THERE IS ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD - EDITION 1/1

With this square-format work, Medsan orchestrates a striking pictorial mashup, transposing the most famous of etchings — Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa — into the heart of a desert. A Templar knight, recognizable by his white surcoat bearing the red cross, sits with his back to us on the rocks, helmet and sword laid aside at his side, facing a colossal wave entirely made of sand that rises before him. In the distance, the ruins of a fortress silhouette against a twilight sky. This unique splash brings together the East and the West, the print and Romantic painting.

The visual power of the composition lies in its generous pictorial treatment, with impasto that recalls oil painting, and in the invention of this dune wave with crested foam-like edges, a direct citation of Hokusai. The figure seen from behind — the famous Rückenfigur — invites the viewer to share his contemplation, in the great Romantic tradition of Caspar David Friedrich and the man facing the sublime.

The impact of the work rests on this confrontation: the warrior, stripped of his weapons, facing the crushing power of the elements — the shifting sands as a metaphor for time, quest, and faith. A grave and magnificent meditation on the smallness of man before the vastness.

A cinematic, atmospheric, and pictorial piece, ideal for bringing an epic, contemplative, and distinctly elegant touch to a collector’s interior.

About the Atelier:
Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists united around a living, plural contemporary creation. Situated as a true site of artistic production, the studio operates both in collaborative creation and in individual approaches, depending on projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realist influences. Beside him, Medsan leans toward pop art painting, exploring color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo places himself in a more instinctive search, blending abstract art, brut art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is thought, realized, and supervised within the studio, with a shared artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.
