Figures in Blue
In Figures in Blue, two women occupy the center of an intimate, close composition. Their bodies overlap and are linked by arms, hands, and gazes, creating a compact structure that conveys complicity, conversation, and shared presence. The proximity between the two figures reduces physical distance and makes the meeting the true core of the work.
The composition is organized around broad curves and defined contours. The faces appear built from simplified profiles and fragmented planes, while the crossed hands create a horizontal rhythm that balances the verticality of the format. The cup held by one of the women introduces a mundane element and places the scene in a moment of pause and dialogue.
Blue dominates the painted surface, unifying the faces, bodies, and surroundings. Its varying intensities—from bright turquoise to deep blues—combine with reds, oranges, and yellows to create a warm and vibrant contrast. The black areas add visual weight and reinforce the silhouettes of the figures.
The brushwork is visible, spontaneous, and direct. In some areas it gently models the volumes; in others it preserves broader, gestural strokes that add dynamism and texture. This painterly freedom coexists with a firm structure, giving rise to a work in which color and form express proximity, affection, and human connection.
