Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911. From a young age he felt a strong religious vocation that led him to enter the cloistered monastery of Pietrasanta, where he stayed for three years, pursuing philosophical studies, then he dedicated himself as a self-taught artist to artistic research, which would lead him to exhibit in numerous shows in Italy and abroad.
A man of faith, he believes that only through art can the divine be reached. And this thought will underpin all his work: "I try to make emptiness – Gentilini declared – This emptiness provokes a certain catharsis in me: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I reevaluate them, but I never know how I will fall into the painting, and this is the realization of a truth toward a sign never thought of."
He was an artist practicing asceticism, to imitate the Saint to whom he was devoted. The two natures, that of human and that of aesthetics, coincide perfectly.
