Description from the seller
At first glance, Ralf Altrieth's painting seems to burst forth in a free, instinctive rush. Then the gaze lingers—and gradually reveals a world more complex, populated by singular presences, unexpected encounters, and silent dialogues. Nothing is fixed. The work continually evolves according to distance, light, and the time spent before it.
In this universe, the boundary between abstraction and figuration deliberately remains unstable. Silhouettes appear, gazes meet, stories seem to begin without ever settling. The viewer is engaged, set in motion. Seeing becomes an active, almost physical, experience.
But beyond their immediate energy, Ralf Altrieth's works settle durably into space. They settle through their density. Through their presence. And through this rare capacity to transform the space in which they take place.

CRITIQUE AND PRESS:
"In this sense, the pictorial poems of Ralf Altrieth are a pure childlike chant. From the crucible of improvisation, he forges a world pristine, made of spontaneous joys and strong impulses."
— Dr Friedhelm Häring, art historian and museum director
"His gestural and chromatic writing describes a world open to new voices and experiments never tried. His canvases and works on paper demonstrate that painting remains a major expression in the contemporary scene."
— Laurent Puech, art historian and curator
