The title "A Moment of Confidence" directly illuminates the scene. The posture of the two women shows great complicity and intimacy. One woman’s arms crossed and the hand on the other’s face convey a moment of serious, secret, or nostalgic discussion, suspended in time.
The painting plays on the contrast of shapes. The perfectly circular porthole on the left offsets the verticality of the two bodies on the right. The horizontal line of the railing cuts across the canvas and structures the space. Thick black lines simplify the anatomy to get to the essentials of posture and movement.
This style recalls the work of 20th-century artists such as Fernand Léger for the thick black outlines and bulky forms, or the Fauvist movement for its choice of pure, non-realistic colors, such as the bright red hair or the green background.
It is a pared-down work that succeeds in capturing a psychological instant — a moment of friendship and secret — using a minimalist and impactful visual language.
