Arnout van Gilst painted in a naturalistic/impressionistic style landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes. He preferred to work outdoors in a secluded place. He set himself up at the edge of a ditch and painted the fields on the other side. Van Gilst pursued a very precise, almost topographical interpretation of his subject. Under the pseudonym A. Jonstra (his mother’s maiden name) Van Gilst painted sailing ships on the Frisian lakes.
