Description from the seller

[HISTORY – FRANCE – 16th/17th CENTURY – DE THOU – 15 VOLUMES]

Extensive sequence (Tomes 2–16) of the significant early modern universal history by Jacques-Auguste de Thou.

Histoire universelle de Jacques-Auguste de Thou, depuis 1543 jusqu'en 1607.
Here presented: Volumes 2 to 16 (from a multi-volume work)

This monumental historical work ranks among the most important historiographical achievements of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553–1617), president of the Paris Parliament and one of the most eminent scholars of his time, describes in his “Histoire universelle” the political, religious and social events of Europe—with particular focus on the French Wars of Religion—from a comparatively moderate and humanist-influenced perspective.

The work was originally written in Latin and later translated into French or disseminated in French editions. It offers a detailed, source-based account of the period between 1543 and 1607 and is still regarded today as a central source for the era of confessional conflicts.

The present listing is an extensive set of 15 volumes (Tome 2–16), which together form an impressive ensemble of this significant edition.

Condition: overall age-appropriate, very good condition. Usual light signs of wear such as slightly browned paper. All title pages are preserved. Bindings stable, text fully legible. Individual deviations between volumes possible.

A rarely offered complete collection of one of the most important works of European historiography.
