Description from the seller
PENUMBRA (1600) - Ex Tenebris (Tyto alba) - Mixed media on canvas
Mixed media, acrylic painting · digital painting · hand signed · 2026
From the deep night emerges a mother-of-pearl face. The barn owl turns its heart-shaped face toward us, edged with amber and tawny, a dark, liquid eye fixed on the shadow with sovereign acuity. The body, speckled with gold and ash, dissolves into the blue-night darkness from which only a ray of light breaks, carving each feather into living reliefs. Perched on its branch, motionless, it is all presence and mystery—a silent sentinel of a nocturnal realm. The work draws on the great tradition of tenebrism, that baroque art of bringing life out of a background of darkness by the mere grace of light. Here, the nocturnal raptor becomes an icon: noble, fierce, timeless. A face-to-face with the gaze of night.
Technique mixte : acrylic painting on ink-pigmented print, matte varnish.
Varnish applied by hand, for the depth of blacks and the lasting protection of the work.
Support: premium canvas stretched over a wooden frame, ready to hang.
Format: 60x40cm
Signed PENUMBRA · Galerie Labo Joconde / Atelier Joconde · certificate of authenticity provided.
PENUMBRA is one of the creations bringing together artists Le Yack, Neo Pablo and Popsan within Atelier Joconde, a family studio where three sensibilities coexist: neo-realism, pop and libre figuration. Under the name PENUMBRA, the Atelier explores animal portraiture in chiaroscuro, in the legacy of baroque tenebrism: figures emerging from the shadow, sculpting light, richly textured matter and an intense gaze.
PENUMBRA gathers portraits of animals caught in the partial light—raptors, felines, wild creatures—snatched from night by a beam of light, balancing nobility and mystery. Each work is named after the Latin name of the species, a nod to old naturalist plates. The through-line: a dialogue between the tenebrism of masters and a contemporary gaze, where the painted material enhances and transfigures the printed image.
Each work is a unique piece.
